I have watched each of you sleep,<br \/>\ntasted the perfect bloom<br \/>\nof your sweet Child breath,<br \/>\nthought of myself<br \/>\nas your great protector,<br \/>\nthe keeper of precious fragile flames.<br \/>\nI chastise myself as I watch you awaken<br \/>\ninto the dawn of your youth,<br \/>\ninto the embrace of young adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>I listen to your stories<br \/>\nas told one to the other and others,<br \/>\nyour voices pure and beautiful<br \/>\nas fine silk,<br \/>\ntexture my ears may touch.<\/p>\n<p>As I listen, I know you have suffered,<br \/>\nbeen staggered by sullen blows of doubt.<br \/>\nI know you have been afraid of me,<br \/>\nyour father,<br \/>\nthat I might come crashing<br \/>\nthrough those doubting walls,<br \/>\nto discover you<br \/>\nwith the ghosts of your imperfections.<\/p>\n<p>In the night, voices do speak to me,<br \/>\nthe tiny ones of those of you<br \/>\nwho have come to go<br \/>\nand those who are still here<br \/>\nbut grown past the Child whispers<br \/>\nI aspire to hear.<br \/>\nI answer them<br \/>\nwith selfish humble tears in my eyes and sympathy<br \/>\nfor what has passed in my breathing,<br \/>\nfor they are the protectors<br \/>\nof my imperfections.<br \/>\nI tell myself I have done my job well,<br \/>\nfor you need me less now<br \/>\nthan ever before<br \/>\nand never as much as I imagined<br \/>\nin the feeble throes<br \/>\nof my attempts at perception.<br \/>\nThe far echoes of tiny voices<br \/>\nring down the spiral canyon of my years.<br \/>\nThey speak to me<br \/>\nin the perfect symmetry of Childhood wisdom.<br \/>\nThey fairly embrace me to stand.<\/p>\n<p>There are those who say I talk to myself.<br \/>\nThey are right, of course,<br \/>\nfor you are myself,<br \/>\nthe very one I was addressing,<br \/>\nthe one I have become.<br \/>\nI may answer a question from a score<br \/>\nof years gone by and by as I watch<br \/>\nmy daughter with her daughter<br \/>\nor my son making words to speak<br \/>\nto a brother twelve years his junior.<\/p>\n<p>I am your father,<br \/>\nthat is all I am&#8230; compleat.<br \/>\nYou give me the strength of your pride,<br \/>\nthe beautiful revelation<br \/>\nof the knowledge of our shared imperfections,<br \/>\nthrough it all,<br \/>\ncarry me to a place of unconditional devotion,<br \/>\nlove without fear, lighting candles<br \/>\nin the dark corners of my soul.<\/p>\n<p>I am made to be free, a man.<br \/>\nYou have been<br \/>\nand remain the perfect sentinels of my journey.<br \/>\nIf I come to see beyond the shadow,<br \/>\nIf I come to walk into and through the fire,<br \/>\nIf I come to feel, to love and be loved,<br \/>\nIf I father.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Author: Tom Sterner-Howe<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The author is widely published online and in print.
